About
Foreign Domestic Worker from Hong Kong
I am a Filipina who worked as a Foreign Domestic Worker in Hong Kong before I met my British husband who used to be my employer 12 years ago.
Since we moved to Singapore 7 years ago, we have had few different maids to help me look after my daughter. To be honest with you all, those of us who have employed many maids before will know that the biodata, the resume’ from the agencies, can be totally misleading. Most of the templates used for presenting the biodata are totally useless.
The biodata is written by the maid and the maid agency, both, will of course, write only good things that will get the maid a new employer. That’s half the purpose of the bio-data. The other half is supposed to give a prospective employer an honest view of the person they may decide to employ.
You will struggle to find a maid agency that will be honest with the bio-data, because they will lose a lot of business. This may be partly the fault of the agaency and partlty the fault of the maid. Many maids are easily lead by unscrupulous agencies who only care about the income from selling the maid’s services on and with little or no view on providing any real quality of service to a family looking for a helper.
So we wound up having maids who have little or no idea, or valid experience, of how to look after young children, how to cook, how to iron, how to manage their time management, and most important how to be safe inside the home. The best way to find out the truth about a maid is from her previous employer. That is why I setup this website to be able to help you guys who are looking for a a helper.
We’ve also set this up to help educate our domestic helper community. Lets be open about this – there isn’t a single person who can honestly say they are great at everything – child care, cooking, cleaning, shopping, and all the other minor duties we end up asking of our helpers. So why tell us lies in the bio-data and disappoint us when we quickly realise the truth? It helps no one.
It’s better to expose your strengths and be open about your weakness’s and start your new relationship at work in complete honesty. Isn’t it?
It’s also helpful if employers are clear on the priorities they are looking for – is child care more important than cooking? etc.
We had a maid who had been working in Singapore for few years when she came to us. One day she decided to wash the electric vacuum cleaner. When she finished washing it she plug it in and switched it on. the electric motor was wet, dripping. Needless to say she fused the electrics and left the apartment without power – several times. It’s a wonder she didn’t electricute herself in the process.
Another lady that worked for us kept feeding my young daughter with pot noodles when I wasn’t around. Many helpers seem to have no idea on how to clean glass windows and mirrors. Many are incapable of ironing, so often my husband would reach his work place and noticed that half of his shirt wasn’t ironed.
These are just few example of the experiences we had over the years and I am not exaggerating. These are true experiences we had hiring maids from agencies, that’s why I have decided to put this website together to help other employers be confident and have a peaceful mind leaving their Foreign Domestic Workers to look after their home and children, and at the same time helping their maids to learn and do their jobs better for a happy working environment, both for employers and their Foreign Domestic Workers.
It’s a very simple fact, I have been studying the behavior of my maids over the years, If they are not happy with their work and you end up scolding them frequently, then they are more unhappy and this effects their concentrating on work and they will keep repeating the same mistakes. They become frightened that they will be scolded again and don’t do their work anymore.
With proper training, I am confident, you and your Foreign Domestic Worker will benefited and will have a happy working relationship that can last for years to come. We hope to offer advice, tips and training through this site to help you both.
Happy Employers and Happy Helpers make for a stress free relationship!
