Foreign Domestic Workers in Singapore
Foreign Domestic Workers in Singapore were recently awarded a day off every week by the Government. It’s telling enough that it takes a government legislation to force employers to consider foreign domestic workers as human beings with rights. Let’s be clear who this is really pointing at – there are many families in Singapore employing foreign domestic workers and treating them with respect and in some cases as if they are family members.
It’s not every employer that abuses their domestic worker. And it’s not just Singapore that suffers from residents that mistreat their foreign domestic worker employees either. It happens across Asia and probably across the world – especially in the Middle East. There are some horror stories from parts of the middle East that I’m sure, if published would cause serious embarrassment to those governments in the world arena of human rights. Or maybe not.
Singapore’s legislation is surely a step forward, but only a tiny step in the plight of those foreign domestic workers that continue to suffer at the hands of rogue employers and unscrupulous agents who steal their earnings and profit from the hard work of those Angels that give up their lives and freedom to support their family’s thousands of miles away.
