Foreign Domestic Workers get Weekly Break
At last there has been some tangible progress in rights for Foreign Domestic Workers in Singapore with the decision to grant new contracts starting in January 2013 a weekly rest day.
Many say this doesn’t go far enough and for those Foreign Domestic Workers that have contracts starting between now and the end of this year, sorry ladies, you’ll have to wait until your next contract before you can get a day off each week.
Unless Foreign Domestic Workers are lucky enough to work for employers with an ounce of humanity about them, the deal still sucks. But it is a step in the right direction.
Until the country starts to show some respect for these hard working people and treat them fairly, the inherent social challenges they face and the problems and challenges faced by all of us that employ and manage these ladies, will continue.
Good work Singapore – but don’t stop now, you’ve a long way still to go!
